What to Expect in Las Terrenas

What to expect in Las Terrenas

  • The coastline of Las Terrenas, with its different beaches and accommodations facing the sea or located near the beach, is one of the destination’s main attractions.

  • But Las Terrenas is not limited to its beachfront: it is also a small coastal town in the Caribbean, with local life, shops, restaurants, supermarkets, banks, clinics, and other essential services for a comfortable stay.

  • Beyond its beaches, Las Terrenas is a great starting point to enjoy activities and discover the natural beauty of the Samaná Peninsula, from coastal experiences and local restaurants to nearby excursions, waterfalls, boat trips, and scenic landscapes.

  • The presence of many international residents and retirees who live here year-round or for several months at a time reinforces its multicultural character and helps first-time visitors quickly feel at ease.

Which area to choose

  • Each area of Las Terrenas has its own atmosphere.

  • Playa Bonita and Cosón are ideal for those looking for wide landscapes, tranquility, and nature.

  • Playa Popy and the Tourist Center offer more movement, restaurants, and easy access to services.

  • Las Ballenas combines beach life, accommodations, and a residential atmosphere.

  • El Portillo is a quieter area, with a natural and relaxed atmosphere.

Getting Around

 Getting Around

  • Las Terrenas can be explored partly on foot, especially along the beach areas. It is possible to enjoy long seaside walks, for example from El Portillo toward Playa Popy and Las Ballenas, or from Playa Bonita toward Cosón.

  • From some central areas, the town center and supermarkets can also be reached on foot, depending on where you are staying.

  • However, it is useful to understand that Las Terrenas is organized around two main coastal sides. On one side are El Portillo, Playa Popy, the Tourist Center, the town center, and Playa Las Ballenas. On the other side are Playa Bonita and Playa Cosón. There is no direct beachfront access between Playa Las Ballenas and Playa Bonita, so moving between these two areas usually requires using the road.

  • For more flexibility, especially if you want to visit several beaches, move between different areas, or discover other attractions in the Samaná province, many visitors use moto taxis, taxis, or rental vehicles. In Las Terrenas, it is easy to find rental options such as scooters, motorcycles, quads, and cars.
